Submission of Entries for The National Design Award of Latvia 2018 has Started

From today, 8 January, submission of entries has started for the design competition - The National Design Award of Latvia (LDGB). Designers are invited to submit their entries for the awards free of charge via the homepage: www.dizainabalva.lv until 8 February this year. Submitted entries will be judged by an international jury comprised of seven design industry experts and the best works of Latvian design will receive their awards at a special ceremony on 12 April 2018.

The National Design Award of Latvia is taking place for the second year running and this year its main message is “design connects”, thus drawing attention to the mutual interaction between industries in design. Last year, 147 design works were submitted for the first National Design Award of Latvia, representing a total of 10 design sub-sectors. In terms of the representation of individual sectors, product design (46%) was most heavily represented, followed by interior (11%) and graphic design (10%).

According to Inguna Elere, H2E Creative Lead, “Last year, we were very successful in initiating an open discussion about design, which we want to continue this year on an even broader scale. We have invited a competent and diverse jury, each member of which represents his own design sub-sector, thus enabling us to properly evaluate all the design works submitted. Given that this is a competition in which the entries will be judged by an international jury, I would like to stress the criterion of quality in regard to the design works entered, and to invite applicants to take utmost care in preparing their entries. It is important that the jury understands why the specific design solution has been created, what problems it solves, what makes it special and what its added value is.”

The entries submitted for the National Design Award of Latvia 2018 will be judged by a team of industry professionals, comprised of seven experts: long-standing G-Star RAW creative director and designer, strategy design and interior design expert Pieter Kool, director of the Berlin Office of Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA), the world’s leading practice specializing in museum planning and exhibition design, exhibition design and museum planning expert Timothy W. Ventimiglia;architect, journalist, author and exhibition curator Ieva Zībārte; co-founder of Madara Cosmetics, brand identity designer of a number of well-known Latvian brands, graphic designer, and lecturer Liene Drāzniece;art curator and theoretician, and Head of Arts Programmes at the ABLV Charitable Foundation, Kaspars Vanags; Accenture Latvia Digital Service Design Lead Kaspars Auzarējs–Auzers, as well as the internationally renowned, Latvia-born Amsterdam-based product, graphic and interior designer, Germans Ermičs.

Second place went to the exhibition stand design The Imprint of Civilization, while third place was awarded to the kids’ balance bike Brum Brum.
