A Review of the First Ever “National Design Award of Latvia 2017” Competition
April saw the conclusion of the series of official events held as part of the “National Design Award of Latvia 2017”, which attracted over 3,000 visitors to the Museum of Decorative Art and Design. From early March to mid-April, as part of the National Design Award of Latvia competition, an awards ceremony was held, along with an exhibition of the works of the 20 finalists, creative workshops, as well as several public discussions with the award’s organisers, finalists and design industry representatives.
The National Design Award of Latvia (NDAL) was held for the first time and attracted a total of 147 entries. An international jury made up of six vastly experienced design industry experts assessed the entries, and after marathon discussions, narrowed the field down to 20 finalists. At the official awards ceremony, awards were presented to the three most distinguished entries: the kids’ balance bike "Brum Brum" (designer: Krišjānis Jermaks), exhibition stand design "The Imprint of Civilization" (designer: Ilze Kalnbērziņa Praz) and to the winner: data visualisation tool “Infogram" (designer: “Infogram”).
One of the National Design Award of Latvia’s goals is to inform and enlighten the public. To achieve this objective, various activities were implemented as part of the NDAL including the exhibition of the finalists’ works, the awards ceremony, creative workshops and public discussions. “Organising a national competition is a huge responsibility. The quantity and diversity of the works submitted, the number of visitors, and the discussions that arose within society confirm that Latvia can and wants to understand the significance of design. The first year has ended successfully, but we are not about to rest on our laurels. We have already started work on next year’s National Design Award of Latvia,” explains one of the NDAL organisers, Ingūna Elere.
The “National Design Award of Latvia” national competition was organised by the H2E Design Studio, in collaboration with the Republic of Latvia’s Ministry of Culture, the Latvian National Museum of Art’s Department of Decorative Art and Design, and the Art Academy of Latvia. The National Design Award of Latvia’s organisers would like to say a big thank you to the award’s main partner “Accenture”, and to the event’s supporters: “Cube”, “Neiburgs”, “SkyNet”, “Picture Agency”, “Live Riga”, “The Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia”, “Antalis”, “The Embassy of the Netherlands in Latvia”, “GaCo”, “JCDecaux” and “Sabiles sidrs”. The organisers are also most grateful for the assistance of the awards’ media supporters: “DEKO”, “IR”, “Būvlaikums.lv” and “Pastaiga”.
The NDAL organisers would express their sincerest gratitude to the designers, competition partners, supporters, media and everybody who followed and took part in the NDAL events in 2017!
