Submission of Entries has Started for the National Design Award of Latvia 2019
From today, 14 January, submission of entries has started for the National Design Award of Latvia 2019 (NDAL). Designers are invited to enter their works for the award free of charge on the homepage: www.dizainabalva.lv by 12.00 on 14 February. Entries will judged by an international jury made up of six experts in the field of design, and on 3 April 2019, Latvia’s 20 best design works will be awarded at a special ceremony.
The National Design Award of Latvia competition is being held for the third time and this year its message is Design is an Action, highlighting design as a goal-oriented process of creation, resolution and improvement. This year, significant changes have been made to the NDAL 2019 judging process. As a result, for the first time, this year’s competition will give the 20 finalists the opportunity to present their submitted entry to both the jury and the public.
As Ingūna Elere, H2E CDO/Creative Lead explains: “We invite designers to submit their best works from the past year, in order to share their experience, receive professional analysis and criticism from international design industry professionals, as well as to draw inspiration for their future work! The goal of the Design Award is to identify and discuss the best of Latvian design, presenting awards to and highlighting the most talented people and teams that have created quality design that corresponds to the highest global standards.”
Works submitted for the National Design Award of Latvia 2019 will be judged by a team of industry professionals, comprised of six experts: the Head of the Victoria and Albert Museum Design, Architecture and Digital Department, and Creative Director of the 2018 London Design Biennale, Christopher Turner (London, United Kingdom), designer and co-owner of the “TALENTED” brand Indra Komarova(Riga, Latvia), Director of the inter-disciplinary design studio Dotdash with over 30 years’ experience working in design, Despina Macris (Brisbane, Australia), the winner of the first NDAL, Infogram Head of Product Design Jānis Godiņš(Riga, Latvia), Creative Director at the Fjord Design Studio and Head of the Design Department Head at the Helsinki Office of Accenture Interactive Daniel Bosch (Helsinki, Finland) and the winner of the 2018 London Design Biennale, designer Artūrs Analts(Riga, Latvia). On 2 April, members of the public will have the chance to meet the jury members in person at a special conference at which they will give public presentations.
Taking place for the first time, on 24 January from 16.00, will be the seminar “How to Enter Works for the Competition in Order to Win?”, in which the award’s organisers will explain important things that entrants need to take into consideration in order to prepare an impressive and quality entry, as well as answering questions from the audience. Last year, first place in the NDAL was awarded to RIGA IFF visual communication and spatial objects, designer: Associates, Partners et Sons. In turn, second place was awarded to the electrical equipment Mass Portal Industrial Design Language and Mass Portal Plastic Product Dryer FD1, designer: SIA Mass Portal, while third place was awarded to Liepāja Council’s homepage: www.liepaja.lv, designer: SIA Wrong Digital. Parallel to this, the special Digital Business award awarded by the award’s main partner - the IT company Accenture Latvia - was awarded to the homepage CSDD.lv, designer: Wrong Digital.
The National Design Award of Latvia is an annual national award in design, whose goals are to identify and promote the best accomplishments of Latvian designers, as well as to facilitate the optimal development of the sector. The National Design Award of Latvia was initiated by the Ministry of Culture. It is organised by the H2E Design Studio in collaboration with the Latvian National Museum of Art and the Art Academy of Latvia.
